Backstreet Boys Fan Fiction-Bad Things
We started noticing the trends and I have read from Sarah and Katy’s page (Cheesy BSB Fan Fic) that they have a rant on the bad trends of fan fiction. That tells me that I am not the only one who finds these problems. So here are my problems, while I try to stay away from their problems because that would mean I am simply repeating their words and not being original. I’ll also try to add my insight on how I tried to change these problems in my story.
Warning: I will be giving away some information of my stories and that may spoil your reading…but still read my stories, they are worth it. Well, the sequel is. Ha ha.
What is the deal? Do people honestly think Kevin looks at 12 year olds? I don’t. I am totally in love with this man and as a 19-year-old, I know I have ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE because of age alone. If he could really have any woman (not girl!) possible, why would he go after a teenager? Seriously, think about it. I doubt he shops in the junior/misses department for girlfriends. But then again, Mar may say I shop in the Men’s/geriatrics department because I’ve always liked older men Haha.
I tried to alleviate this, I honestly did. Nicole is about 22 in the first story, and I apologize for being a hypocrite on this. But, I just had to have Mar in this story and it was hard to make her a friend of Nicole’s from college and have them much older than AJ. I know a few people made comments they thought maybe Nic and AJ would have hooked up. If Mar weren’t reading the story, I may have ventured that route, but I had to be true to my own friends and have AJ be her love interest. I guess in the end there is no logical reason why Nic was only 22 and Kevin 28, so I apologize.
2. AJ is a sex fiend.
I will admit that I make plenty of jokes to Mar about this fact (or is it fiction? I’m not so sure myself). I have heard through the grapevine that AJ is not the most loyal man. But I guess one could be creative in fan fic and make him loyal for once? Is that so hard to do? And if he is such a sex fiend, make it realistic that he’s with girls his own age. I read one where he was hitting on a girl who was like sixteen…another Kevin thing about shopping at Kids R Us for girlfriends.
On a side note, there is a story in particular that will remain anonymous (unless you ask) where a few celebrities show up and are total sex fiends themselves. It was terribly graphic, but that’s another rant all together (See BSB fan fiction-very bad things). Why do people think men are such horn dogs? I know I’ve made comments to Mar about hearing a guy say he’s had 15 women in his life and I said that was AJ’s weekly goal. But seriously, I’m sure some men out there are slowing down. Right? Okay, maybe this is just a little wish since I like AJ, not as much as Kevin I may add (another rant).
I would like to say I am proud of myself for not making AJ a sex maniac. He makes some comments that are perverted, but most people do whether they want to admit it or not. And I am about 99.9% positive AJ makes a lot of perverted comments. There is no actual, readable action in my story for AJ, besides giving a kiss here or there. Thank you, I am respectable to AJ and believe—given a certain person—he could loyal. While Mar has brought it to my attention, there are about two times when one could guess that he is partaking in the horizontal mambo. However, there are no literal words about it.
3. Howie gets no loving.
Okay, so maybe that is true and not happening in the fan fic world alone, but in the real world as well. I mean, he is the least good-looking one in the group (only in my own opinion). But I must say, there are people out there who think Howie is like a Greek God, or would it be Latin God? Who knows? Some people think he is a great guy and I’m sure he is. He probably does live up to that “Sweet D” nickname. I liked “Oh! What a Beautiful Morning” on Sarah and Katy’s hosted page. The trilogy is a good story and Howie is cool in it. For a change of pace, Kat’s Fabricated has Howie with a girl and it’s a good story (I don’t want to give away too much, but he’s not 100% Sweet D).
But, I must admit that Mar and myself have both admitted that we would be willing to date any one of the guys. Of course, if we had our choice, Howie is the last one on the list, haha. But still, I do think Howie is good looking, I just think the others are better looking. My mom even thinks he’s good looking, then again she likes long hair. Better to run your hair through (with the exception of Kevin—another rant).
In my story…Howie had Melissa. And boy if you guys knew Melissa, Mar’s roommate, you’d be laughing as much as I am right now about it. Yeah, Howie had a girl in my story, and she appears as his “regular girlfriend” in both the first one and the sequel. So congrats Mel on the relationship, when’s the wedding? Haha.
4. There are no good Brian stories.
I realized this last night talking with Ang. She told me she normally only reads Kevin stories because she doesn’t care about anyone else but Brian. She’s actually a Brian fan, but cannot find any good Brian fic. I tried to think hard last night, because I have read—or at least started—quite a few stories, to come up with a good Brian fic. The only one I can recommend is the Adventures of Mad and Ash (Sarah and Katy’s site). It’s a good story and I can’t think of who dates the other girl, but it’s a good story. More like an ongoing saga. Another good one is Temporary Moment of Bliss. Brian actually hits on another girl while he’s with Leighanne. I know I was afraid it’d make Brian out to be an asshole for cheating on her, but he’s not. He still remains sweet.
My story was meant to be a Kevin story and nothing else, so I have no reason to make Brian have a big part. Although Jackie better be happy that I made her with Brian!
5. The guys are always single.
BULL SHIT! That is all I can say to that, bull shit. The guys are not single. Especially not all five of them at once. That is the stupidest thing I have ever read. And I especially hate those stories where all five are going after the same girl. If that isn’t stupid, I don’t know what is.
In Saved, all the guys were taken, except AJ in the beginning. Nick had Marie (named for my friend Gina), Howie had Melissa (as noted before) and Brian had Jackie (noted before). I’d like to add that while Kevin had Kristin, I honestly did not remember that his current girl’s name was really Kristin. I just honestly don’t like that name and thought I would use it. Sorry to the real Kristin for writing you the way I did.
6. If they do have girlfriends, and the particular guy is a major character, that girlfriend is a bitch.
Okay, this is a simple one to spot. It is done in so, so, so many stories. Even the ones I love. It’s a trend and a very popular one that I cannot bitch about too much. In Temporary Moment of Bliss, Leighanne is a bitch. In Kat’s I Keep It to Myself, Amanda is a bitch. I think on the Act Like I’m a Spaceship page “In the Arms of Angels,” Nick’s girlfriend is a total bitch (not sure if that is the story-all that I know is that it’s on that site). There are many more, and I apologize for pointing the stories out because I don’t like to do so unless asked. But I must say, in these instances, the guys and their girls are written well that you absolutely feel sorry that the guys are not willing to see how horrible the girls are. You also come to realize that sometimes love just ain’t enough (sorry I heard that song like three times today and had to say it).
Okay, yes, Kristin is a bitch in my story. I apologize for being a hypocrite. I am simply stating the trends I see and how they are used. I used it because I doubt Kevin would be single for one moment long enough to think about someone who worked on the tours. And I guess it was a simple way to make everyone cheer for Nicole. Another reason why Joanna was the way she was (based on someone I know). And the same reason Scott was all sly and shit, like he was. It’s just fun to write nasty characters and make the good guys, real good, but nasty as well. Like when Nicole hit Joanna. Or when she yells at Mrs. Dylan. Nicole’s being rude, but you’re still in her corner.
7. The guys have sex and it has to be documented.
The first truth of fan fic is used alongside with the first lie. Yes, they guys have sex. But, no, you do not have to document it the way some do. See BSB Fan Fic-Very Bad Things. You can use words to insinuate the sex, but you do not have to detail it. Sarah and Katy have always been good, on their own work and their hosted, on not having to be graphic or specific.
Yeah, Nicole has sex in my story. How could the girl not with that hot man? So I said she was taking off his shirt and her own? And yeah, I also made comments about how she was making love; it was never sex. And I saw Mar flinch at that because it is something hard to state and to read. But seriously, things like that happen sometimes.
8. The guys are terribly cheesy and always romantic.
I guess this is where I cross the pattern and use my story as reference first. I know the guys are caring and know when to say things that are meaningful and they will say cheesy things, but puhlease! Be realistic. I’m sure they are stupid and foolish about other things, not being lovey-dovey 27 hours a day/7 days a week. I wanted Kevin to be romantic with Nicole but I also wanted Nicole to be straight up about it. That’s why she always makes comments about it being so cheesy. And Ang noted it best; “It’s different to be like ‘Oh, you are so cheesy,’ in a flimsy way. But it’s better to say, ‘Cheese and corn’ in a shit way.” I’m not sure what I’m saying here, but I know it’s a compliment to my story. If you are going to be cheesy, you need to lighten the story up with some smart asses or some fun situations as well.
9. When you have five guys and five girls, they will make five happy couples.
Do I hear another “BULL SHIT?” I believe I do. Another variation is the typical, girl group on the road with BSB and they all hook up, etc. This is horrible and unrealistic. It goes along the lines of #5. The guys will not always be single and willing to date anyone around them! Another variation is that a girl will bring her friends around and they all make a happy BSB family with all the couples hooking up with no problems. While “I Don’t Care Who You Are” is somewhat guilty of this, she does it in a good way. Brian and Sarah like each other, but nothing has happened in the 30+ chapters. Kim and Howie like each other, but they have done nothing but flirt and have even hit a rough patch or two. And Nick and Angela are one big rollercoaster. So, this way they are not all hooked up in a happily ever after way. Kevin likes the Public Relations gal who’s not even with them yet and AJ is lonely. Although as far as it has posted, that girl Lexi’s interested.
Okay, so I’m guilty once again. But it was only Mar, no one else. One can argue that I made the other guys have girlfriends who were my friends, but they were technically already together in the story and I was merely using their names. And in a realistic manner (and I apologize to Gina here) Nick winds up breaking it off with Marie in the sequel (nothing is really noted, just in conversation) and he is then with another girl named Stephanie. As a side note to Gina, Ang pointed out to me how funny it was that Nick broke up with Marie for Steph, and I honestly never thought of it that way and I changed it shortly after. I just wanted to use a name that sounded like a little girl name. I think I changed it to Susie on my disk.
10. If there is a series—or simply a sequel—the story is strained.
“Oh! What a Beautiful Morning,” and “Oh! What a Beautiful Day” is a good series to read because you wonder what happened to them after they left the school. But I am almost afraid to note that “Happy Trails,” the third installment seems to be lacing something. I’m not sure what, but I will let you know when I figure it out. Also the Mad and Ash stories (these stories are all on Sarah and Katy’s page) are pretty good and having something new and inventive happen.
But, I must add that there are some still that have trouble keeping the story lively. I think it’s called the Never-ending Story (and it is a never-ending story) where three girls are stuck in a Denny’s with the guys. I think the story is hilarious, (and an actual Brian story one could say, even though its more of a combo) and innovative to be in a Denny’s. But as it goes on, they go back to school, it’s a little weird and when they get locked in at the movie, I’m thinking, Aw hell nah! It’s happening all over again? Some stories are just as good as their pre-quels, but normally they are not. The Wallet is another one as well as Famous Last Words; it’s just getting strained with Kevin’s relationship with that stubborn girl. I don’t remember much about that one. That’s how impressed I was.
>Yes, I have written Backstreet Boy Fan Fiction. I think it all started when Mar and myself were reading the stories and pointing out what we found wrong. We both admitted we could write something much better than what we were reading. I will note, however, that there are quite a few stories we both are reading that are great. On Backstreet Mania, we both recommend “I Don’t Care Who You Are.” It is one of the funniest, if not the funniest stories I’ve read.
1. Kevin gets hooked up with girls half his age.
>Note: I wrote this lil' thing before I came upon
the great internet friendship with Sarah (of Sarah and Katy's Cheesey Backstreet Boys Fiction).
I had mentioned once about "The Neverending Story" and she informed me...changing my naivety on the story. They made it inteded for slapstick-stupidity. It's a mockery of those other long-ass stories.
Now, after reviewing that fact, I find this story hilarious! I never realized the point to them writing it, but it's obvious now: simply to entertain.
As far as my story, I honestly think the sequel is better than the first one. Mostly because it explores Nicole more as a person, outside of her working for the guys in that controlled environment. I also thought I had more action in it, more situations and of course having Nic meet Brian McKnight was fun to write about, haha. But I think the key to having a good series is ending each story with the thoughts that it could be ended, but one still wonders, well now what? That’s how I ended my first one. I didn’t plan on writing the sequel, but I did have fun with writing the first one and knew that I could keep Saved as a single story, yet it could also be added to for the sequel. Tell ya what…you read the stories and tell me what you think!
Oh, yeah, the girl with Kevin in "The Wallet," is Darby and I'm starting to enjoy it again with Darby and Kevin being "friends." Also, I recently went back and re-read "Famous Last Words" and have found the fun in that one as well. And the girl with Kevin is named Nessa.
